The Road Menders replica in oil on canvas
Van Gogh Studio is situated in close proximity to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, offering an opportunity to examine the original works of the master himself. Our collection features oil paintings on canvas, created by predominantly Dutch artists who have meticulously studied Van Gogh's techniques, including his brushstrokes, color blending, atmospheric effects, and rhythmic brushwork.
Repaving Cours de l'Est
Vincent van Gogh was captivated by the sight of workers repaving a street in Saint-Rémy, known then as the Cours de l'Est. During his numerous excursions from the Asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in the fall and winter of 1889-90, he stumbled upon this picturesque scene and was inspired to capture it on canvas.
The theme of workers amidst the tranquil landscape was not new to Van Gogh's artistry. He had explored this motif in his earlier paintings executed in Holland. Yet, the beauty of the Cours de l'Est in Saint-Rémy, with its unique light and colors, compelled him to create a new work of art.
On 7 December 1889,
Vincent wrote to Theo from Saint-Rémy:
“The last study I have done is a view of the village, where they were at work – under some enormous plane trees – repairing the pavements. So there are heaps of sand, stones and gigantic trunks – the leaves yellowing and here and there you get a glimpse of a house front and small figures.”
