To his utter delight, the talented Emile Bernard and Paul Gauguin, who were working together in Brittany at the time, sent him their self-portraits. Overjoyed by this gesture, Van Gogh inscribed one of his self-portraits with the heartfelt message "To my friend Paul Gauguin" and eagerly sent it to him.
