Inspiration

Van Gogh was probably inspired by a Japanese print of a crab that he saw in Le Japon Artistique, a magazine that was sent to him by his brother Theo Van Gogh in September 1888.

It was probably one of those days when Vincent could not go out to paint because of bad weather. Nevertheless, he had a burning desire to paint something every day. There is one more painting that he made in 1889 which has two crabs. One of them is lying on its back.
